An Overview of South Korea

نظرة عامة

Country Area (مساحة الدولة)

South Korea covers an area of approximately 100,363 square kilometers. It's a relatively small, mountainous country, meaning cities are densely populated.

The People (الشعب)

Koreans are known for being hardworking, resilient, and group-oriented. Society is built on Confucian principles of respect for elders and hierarchy.

Currency (العملة)

The official currency is the South Korean Won (KRW). While it is a technologically advanced country, carrying some cash is still useful for traditional markets.

Culture & Daily Life

Society & Work

Work Culture (ثقافة العمل)

The work culture is demanding, with long hours being common. Hierarchy is very important, and group harmony is prioritized. The "ppalli-ppalli" (hurry, hurry) culture means things move at a very fast pace.

Culture & Etiquette (الثقافة العامة)

Respect for elders is paramount. Bowing is a common greeting. When dining, wait for the eldest person to start eating. Tipping is not customary and can be considered rude.

Attire (اللباس)

South Korea is a global fashion hub. People are very style-conscious, with trends changing rapidly. Professional attire is formal. The traditional dress, the Hanbok, is worn on special occasions.

Cuisine (المطبخ)

Korean food is known for its bold, spicy, and savory flavors. Meals are almost always served with a variety of side dishes (banchan), with Kimchi being the most famous.

  • Kimchi: Fermented cabbage, a spicy and sour staple at every meal.
  • Bibimbap: A bowl of warm rice topped with vegetables, beef, a fried egg, and spicy gochujang sauce.
  • Korean BBQ (Gogi-gui): Grilling meat (like bulgogi or galbi) at your own table is a popular social dining experience.

More than a messaging app, it's the primary communication tool for everyone and everything in Korea, including payments (KakaoPay).

  • Naver Map / Kakao Map

Google Maps has limited functionality in Korea. These local apps are essential for accurate navigation, public transport times, and finding places.

  • Coupang

The "Amazon of Korea," famous for its incredibly fast "Rocket Delivery" service, often arriving the next morning.

  • Papago

A translation app developed by Naver, generally considered more accurate for the Korean language than Google Translate.

  • Kakao T

The primary app for hailing taxis, similar to Uber.

  • Yogiyo / Baemin

The two dominant food delivery apps, offering a huge variety of restaurants.
